Crafting Wearable Art

I love when a design forms in my mind and I can translate the idea into something tangible; something with rich colors and subtle textures. Working with leather is so satisfying. It’s natural beauty generates something even better than the imagined idea. When I look at a finished piece and remember that the leather would have otherwise been thrown away, I feel a little bit victorious!

Meet The Maker

Kara Johnson, designer and maker behind Dust & Sunshine, has roots in the Rockies and currently resides in Coastal North Carolina. Growing up in Wyoming, she gained a deep appreciation for the natural surroundings and Western lifestyle of the small mountain town that she called home. Kara believes strongly in building community, building a business with integrity and putting love and care into each of her handcrafted pieces.

After 15 cherished years in the non-profit world, she decided to switch gears, following strong creative urges and the desire to work for herself while raising her young daughter. Through her work, she expresses her bold, playful spirit and eye for design. She’s perpetually inspired by music, nature and other strong women.
